N.V.M. Gonzalez

Si Néstor Vicente Madali González (Septyembre 8, 1915- Nobyembre 28, 1999) ay isang manunulat na Pilipino.

Talambuhay

Pinanganak siya noong Septyembre 8, 1915 sa Romblon, Philippines, ngunit pinalaki sa Mansalay, isang probinsya sa timog ng Oriental Mindoro. Asak siya ng isang guro at superbisor ng paaralan. Bilang binatilyo, tinulungan niya ang ama niya sa pamamagitan ng paghahatid ng karne sa mga karatig-bayan. Isa rin siyang musikero; tumugtog siya ng byolin at nagmay-ari ng apat na gitara. Nakuha niya ang una niyang suweldo sa pamamagitan ng pagtugtog ng byolin sa libing ng isang Tsino saRomblon. Pumasok si Gonzales sa Mindoro High School (ngayon ay Jose J. Leido Jr. Memorial National High School) mula 1927 hanggang 1930. Nag-aral siya ng kolehiyo sa National University (Manila) ngunit hindi niya natapos ang kanyang undergraduate degree. Habang nasa Manila, nagsulat si Gonzales para sa Philippine Graphic at naging patnugot para sa Evening News Magazine at Manila Chronicle. Nalathala ang una niyang sanaysay sa Philippine Graphic at ang una niyang tula sa Poetry noong 1934. Naging kilala ang pangalan niya sa mga manunulat ng Pilipinas bilang isang miyembro ng Board of Advisers ng Likhaan: the University of the Philippines Creative Writing Center, patnugot ng The Diliman Review at unang presidente ng Philippine Writers' Association. Nag-aral ng malikhaing pagsulat si Gonzales kay Wallace Stegner at Katherine Anne Porter sa Stanford University. Noong 1950, bumalik si Gonzales sa Philippinas at nagturo sa University of Santo Tomas, sa Philippine Women's University at sa University of the Philippines (U.P.). Sa U.P., si Gonzales ang isa sa dalawang propesor na natanggap upang magturo sa unibersidad bagamat wala siyang hawak na degree. Dahil sa kanyang panitikan at mga parangal, nagturo si Gonzales sa University of California, Santa Barbara, California State University, Hayward, sa University of Washington, sa University of California, Los Angeles, at sa University of California, Berkeley.

Si Gonzales ay nakalibing sa Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Noong Abril 14, 1987, ibinigay ngUniversity of the Philippines kay N.V.M. González ang degree na Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, at sinabi na ito ay "For his creative genius in shaping the Philippine short story and novel, and making a new clearing within the English idiom and tradition on which he established an authentic vocabulary, ...for his insightful criticism by which he advanced the literary tradition of the Filipino and enriched the vocation for all writers of the present generation...for his visions and auguries by which he gave the Filipino sense and sensibility a profound and unmistakable script read and reread throughout the international community of letters..."

Iprinoklama na National Artist of the Philippines si N.V.M Gonzales noong 1997. Namatay siya noong Nobyembre 28, 1999 sa Quezon City, Philippines sa edad na 84. Bilang National Artist, pinarangalan si Gonzales at inilibing sa Libingan ng mga Bayani.
