Their existence as doges is uncorroborated by any source before the 11th century but, as JJ Norwich suggest, is probably not entirely legendary. Traditionally, the establishment of the Republic is, thus, dated to 697.

Ang Republika ng Venezia o Most Serene Republic of Venice (Benesyano: (Serenìsima) Repùblica Vèneta o Repùblica de Venesia, Italyano: Serenissima Repubblica di Venezia} ay ang isang estado na nagsimula sa lungsod ng Venezia sa Hilagang Italya. Tumagal ang estado at republika sa 1000 taon, mula sa ika-7 siglo AD hanggang 1797. Itinuring La Serenissima ang republika, bilang sangguni sa titulo nitong Venezio angn Pinaka-Serene na Republika. Naging bahagi ito ng Silangang Imperyong Romano pero naging kaaway ng imperyo sa panahon ni Alexios I Komnenos ng Imp. Bisantino. Bumagsak ang republika sa paglaki ng Imperyong Pranses at kay Napoleon. Ang lungsod ng bumagsak na republika ay naging teritoryo ng Austria bilang Probinsyang Venezio.
