Asidong amino ang tawag sa isang grupo ng mga organikong molecule na nagsisilbing panimulang sangkap sa paggawa ng protina. Mahalaga ang amino acids sa paglaki ng isang indibidwal. Mayroong dalawampung amino acids na kailangan ng tao, siyam dito ay tinatawag na essential amino acids samantalang labingisa naman ay tinatawag na non-essential. Ang pagkakaiba ng dalawang grupong ito ay ang kakayahan ng tao na mag-sintesays ng mga sinasabing molecule. Kung ang amino acid ay hindi kayang gawin ng katawan ng tao ito ay itinuturing na essential, sa kabilang banda kung kaya natin itong gawin ito ay sinasabing non-essential. Kasama sa mga essential na amino acid ang: Histidine (His; H), Isoleucine (Ile; I), Leucine (Leu; L), Lysine (Lys; K), Methionine (Met; M), Phenylalanine (Phe; F), Threonine (Thr; T), Tryptophan (Trp; W) at Valine (Val; V).2Samantala, kabilang naman sa mga non-essential amino acids ang: Alanine (Ala; A), Arginine (Arg; R), Aspartic Acid (Asp; D), Asparagine (Asn; N), Cysteine (Cys; C), Glutamic acid (Glu; E), Glutamine (Gln; Q), Glycine (Gly; G), Proline (Pro; P), Serine (Ser; S) at Tyrosine (Tyr; Y).2 Ipinapakita sa ilalimang istruktura ng mga nasabing amino acid.1,2,3 Ang essential amino acids ay: Histidine (His; H), Isoleucine (Ile; I), Leucine (Leu; L), Lysine (Lys; K), Methionine (Met; M), Phenylalanine (Phe; F), Threonine (Thr; T), Tryptophan (Trp; W) at Valine (Val; V).2
