Ang watawat ng Kapuluang Marshall ay pinagtibay sa pagsisimula ng sariling pamahalaan, Mayo 1, 1979 . Ang watawat ay dinisenyo ni Emlain Kabua, na nagsilbi bilang unang First Lady ng republika.[1]
Ang mga tuntunin at mga detalye tungkol sa bandila ay itinakda sa Opisyal na Bandila ng Marshall Islands Act 1979 (Public Law 1979–1).[2]
