Ang ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) ay isang maagang packet switching network at ang unang network na nagpatupad ng protocol suite na TCP/IP. Ang dalawang teknolohiyang ito ang naging teknikal na pundasyon ng Internet. Ang ARPANET ay unang pinondohan ng Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) ng Department of Defense ng Estados Unidos.[1][2][3][4][5]

Ang metolohiyang packet switching na na ginamit sa ARPANET ay batay sa mga konsepto at disenyo ng mga Amerikanong Leonard Kleinrock at Paul Baran, siyentipikong British na si Donald Davies, at Lawrence Roberts ng Lincoln Laboratory.[6] Ang communications protocol na TCP/IP ay binuo para sa ARPANET nina computer scientist Robert Kahn at Vint Cerf, at isinasama ng mga konsepto ni Louis Pouzin para sa proyektong Pranses na CYCLADES.

Habang umuusad ang proyekto, ang mga protocol sa internetworking ay binuo upang ang iba't ibang hiwalay na network ay maaaring kumabit sa isang network ng mga network. Ang access sa ARPANET ay pinalawak noong 1981 nang pinondohan ng National Science Foundation (NSF) ang Computer Science Network (CSNET). Noong 1982, ang Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) ay ipinakilala bilang pamantayang networking protocol sa ARPANET. Noong unang bahagi ng dekada 1980 pinondohan ng NSF ang pagtatatag para sa pambansang supercomputing centers sa ilang unibersidad, at ibinigay sa interconnectivity noong 1986 sa proyektong NSFNET, na lumikha rin ng network access sa supercomputer sites sa Estados Unidos mula sa organisasyong pananaliksik at pang-edukasyon. Isinara ang ARPANET noong 1990.
