This is a category for all templates beginning with "User". These templates are not encyclopedic and are not part of the encyclopedic content.

Over-categorization[baguhin | baguhin ang wikitext]

Do not put userboxes in both main category and subcategory such as:

[[Category:User templates|{{PAGENAME}}]]
[[Category:Interest user templates|{{PAGENAME}}]]

As you can see the page should only be in Interest user templates. Category:User templates should actually be empty.

Recently a lot of userboxes have been categorized as:

[[Category:User templates|{{PAGENAME}}]]

Do not do this. This will put all userboxes sorted under "U", which obviously defeats the purpose of the category.

Duplicate userbox tips[baguhin | baguhin ang wikitext]

Now a large problem in this category and its sub-categories is when a user copies the source of a userbox and places it on his/her userpage, this can cause mis-categorizations and the like.

To find the original userbox type the info section of the userbox into the search box and click search.
Obviously you only get mainspace entries. Now change the search type from MediaWiki to Google and results should appear.
If you are lucky the template or subpage from which the userbox originated will be at the top, if not, if the first entry is a userpage click it anyway.
Now click "edit this page", depending on the layout of the userpage you will have to find the transcluded userbox by searching for a common keyword or counting the userboxes. Obviously click "back" on your explorer and pick another userpage if the one you are viewing has a sourced userbox.
If you have the name of the template simply place it in the userpage in place of the copied userbox with {{}}.
It is unnecessary to do anything more than just remove the categories, but if you do, make sure to replace it with a subst version of the userbox (subst will respect the noinclude tags) rather than a transclusion (since the user clearly doesn't want it transcluded). and MAKE SURE the userbox has the same appearance and wording as the one you are replacing.
