'Filipino' reminds me of The Emperor's New Clothes. The Filipinos decided that they needed a national language and so they invented Filipino and they actually beleived that they had a new language when in fact they had none.

The truth is, if you disregard all the political nonsense, there is no such thing as a 'Filipino Language.' What they call Filipino is merely Tagalog. Defenders of Filipino will argue that Filipino is different from Tagalog because, while it is based on Tagalog, it borrows from other languages. But borrowing from other languages is a common trait of ALL languages.

Defenders of Filipino will also often tell you that Tagalog is merely a dialect of the Filipino language. But this is pure nonsense. If Filipino is based on Tagalog, how can Tagalog be a dialect of Filipino? How can Tagalog be the mother of Filipino and at the same time be its daughter?

Filipino has also contributed to the worsening of the linguistic standards in the Philippines. Just watch Philippine television. Advertisements, programs, and even the news are delivered in Taglish. Of course they will say that nothing's wrong with that because Filipino is supposed to borrow from other languages. But while borrowing from other languages is acceptable it should only be done when there are no native words that can be used. But what we see is the reckless and careless mixing of Tagalog with English. It is particularly sad to see even government officials (including the president herself) delivering speeches in Taglish.
