Natuklasan ni Graham ang asteroid na 9 Metis mula sa Obserbatoryong Markree noong 25 Abril 1848 habang nagmamasid gamit ang isang 3-pulgadang siwang na wide-field telescope na ginawa para sa paghahanap ng kometa ng German instrument maker na Ertel.^[1]^[2]
