Si Harnaaz Kaur Sandhu (ipinanganak noong 3 Marso 2000) ay isang modelo, aktres at beauty pageant titleholder na Indiyano na kinoronahan bilang Miss Universe 2021. Si Sandhu ang ikatlong babaeng Indiyan at ang kauna-unahang Sikh na nanalo bilang Miss Universe.[1]

Si Sandhu ay nakoronahan din bilang Femina Miss India Punjab noong 2019, at naging isang semifinalist sa Femina Miss India noong 2019.[2]

Ipinanganak si Sandhu sa nayon ng Kohali sa distrito ng Gurdaspur sa mga magulang na sina Pritampal Singh Sandhu, isang rieltor, at si Rabinder Kaur Sandhu, isang hinekolohista.[3] Lumaki si Sandhu sa isang pamilyang Jat Sikh.[4]

Noong 2006, lumipat ang pamilya ni Sandhu sa Inglatera, bago bumalik sa Indiya makalipas ang dalawang taon.[5] Sila ay nanirahan sa Chandigarh kung saan lumaki si Sandhu, at nag-aral sa Shivalik Public School at sa Post Graduate Government College for Girls. Natamo ni Sandhu ang kanyang Bachelor's Degree sa Information Technology at sa kasalukuyan, siya ay kumukuha ng Master's Degree sa pampublikong administrasyon. Sa paunang kompetisyon na ginanap noong ika-22 ng Setyembre, iginawad kay Sandhu ang parangal na Miss Beautiful Skin at naging pinalista para sa mga parangal na Miss Beach Body, Miss Beautiful Smile, Miss Photogenic, at Miss Talented.[10]

Sa opening statement round ng Miss Diva 2021 noong ika-30 ng Setyembre 2021, ipinahayag ni Sandhu bilang isa sa mga semifinalist na:[11]

"From a young girl with fragile mental health who faced bullying and body shaming to a woman who emerged like a phoenix, realising her true potential. From an individual who once doubted her own existence to a woman who is aspiring to inspire the youth. Today, I stand proudly in front of the Universe as a courageous, vivacious and a compassionate woman who is all set to lead a life with a purpose, and to leave behind a remarkable legacy."

Nakapasok si Sandhu sa sumunod na round ng kompetisyon. Sa huling question and answer round, ang limang pinalista ay binigyan ng iba't ibang paksang sasabihin sa pamamagitan ng isang draw. Napili ni Sandhu ang Global Warming and Climate Change, kung saan ipinarating niya:[12]

"One day, life will flash before your eyes, make sure it's worth watching. However, this is not the life you want to watch, where the climate is changing and the environment is dying. It is one of the fiasco that us humans have done to the environment. I do believe that we still have time to undo our irresponsible behaviour. Earth is all we have in common and our small acts as individuals when multiplied by billions can transform the whole world. Start now, from tonight, switch off those extra lights when not in use. Thank you."

Pagkatapos ng kompetisyon, kinoronahan ni Adline Castelino si Sandhu bilang Miss Diva Universe 2021.[12]

Bilang Miss Diva 2021, si Sandhu ang kumatawan sa Indiya sa Miss Universe 2021. Ang kompetisyon ay ginanap noong ika-13 ng Disyembre 2021 sa Eilat, Israel.[13][14] Mula sa 80 kalahok, napabilang si Sandhu sa Top 16 na sumabak sa swimsuit competition at sa Top 10 na sumabak sa evening gown competition. Sinuot ni Sandhu para sa evening gown competition ang isang champaigne silver na see-through gown na dinisenyo ni Saisha Shinde, isang taga-disenyong transekswal na Indiyan.[15][16]

Pagkatapos ng evening gown competition, napabilang si Sandhu bilang isa sa limang pinalista na kakalahok sa question and answer round. Itinanong ni Steve Harvey kay Sandhu "Many people think climate change is a hoax. What would you do to convince them otherwise?", kung saan ipinarating niya:[17]

"Honestly, my heart breaks to see how nature is going through a lot of problems and it's all due to our irresponsible behavior. I totally feel that this is the time to take actions and talk less. Because each action could either kill or save nature. Prevent and protect is better than repent and repair and this is what I'm trying to convince you guys today."

Pagkatapos ng question and answer round, napabilang si Sandhu bilang isa sa tatlong pinalista na kakalahok sa final question round. Itinanong ni Steve Harvey kay Sandhu "What advice would you give tp young women watching on how to deal the pressures they face today?", kung saan ipinarating niya:[17]

"I think the biggest pressure the youth of today is facing is to believe in themselves. To know that you are unique, that's what makes you beautiful. Stop comparing yourselves with others and let's talk about more important things that's happening worldwide. This is what you need to understand. Come out, speak for yourself because you are the leader of your life, you are the voice of your own. I believed in myself and that's why I'm standing here today."

Pagkatapos ng kompetisyon, kinoronahan ni Andrea Meza ng Mehiko si Harnaaz Sandhu ng Indiya bilang Miss Universe 2021. Ito ang pangatlong tagumpay ng Indiya sa kasaysayan ng kompetisyon, kasunod ni Sushmita Sen noong 1994, at Lara Dutta noong 2000.[18][19] Sa panahon ng kanyang katungkulan bilang Miss Universe 2021, nakapaglakbay si Sandhu sa Israel, iba't-ibang lungsod sa Estados Unidos, sa Pilipinas, Indonesya, Biyetnam, Timog Aprika, at ang kanyang sariling bansang Indiya.[20][21][22]
