Ang Alabama ay isang estado na matatagpuan sa Katimugang Estados Unidos. Ayon sa senso ng Estados Unidos noong 2010, pandalawampu't-tatlong pinakamataong estado ang Alabama na may 4,779,745 katao at ang pandalawampu't-walong pinakamalaki ayon sa lawak na sumasaklaw sa 50,645.33 milya kuwadrado (131,170.8 km2) ng lupa.[1] Nahahati ang Alabama sa 67 mga kondado at binubuo ng 460 mga nasaping munisipalidad na binubuo ng 169 mga lungsod at 291 mga bayan.[2] Ang mga lungsod at bayan na ito ay sumasakop lamang sa 9.6% ng kabuuang teritoryo ng estado ngunit tahanan ng 60.4% ng populasyon nito.[1]
Tinutukoy ng Kodigo ng Alabama ng 1975 ang ligal na paggamit ng mga terminong "town" (bayan) at "city" (lungsod) batay sa populasyon. Ang isang munisipalidad na may populasyon ng hindi bababa sa 2,000 ay isang lungsod, habang bayan naman ang isang munisipalidad na may populasyong mas-mababa sa 2,000.[3] Para sa mga layuning pambatas, nahahati ang mga munisipalidad sa walong mga klase batay sa populasyon, na tiniyak ng senso ng Estados Unidos noong 1970.[4][5] Hindi nagbabago ang klase ng isang munisipalidad kapag tumaas o bumaba ang populasyon dahil ang mga bilang ng populasyon ay nakabatay sa senso noong 1970. Anumang munisipalidad na sinapi o ininkorporada pagkaraan ng 28 Hunyo 1979 ay inilagay sa isang klaseng batay sa populasyon ng munisipalidad noong oras ng pagsasapi nito. Ang Unang Klase (Class 1) ay lahat ng mga lungsod na may populasyong hindi bababa sa 300,000 ayon sa senso 1970. Ang Birmingham ay ang tanging Unang Klaseng munisipalidad ng estado.[6] Ang mga Ikalawang Klase (Class 2) ay mga lungsod na may populasyong sa pagitan ng 175,000 at 299,999 katao ayon sa senso 1970. Tanging Ikalawang Klaseng munisipalidad lamang ang Mobile. Ang Montgomery at Huntsville ay mga Ikatlong Klaseng (Class 3) munisipalidad. Ito ay yaong mga munisipalidad na may mga populasyong sa pagitan ng 100,000 at 174,999 katao ayon sa senso 1970. Ikaapat na Klaseng (Class 4) mga lungsod ang Tuscaloosa at Gadsden na may mga populasyong sa pagitan ng 50,000 at 99,999 katao ayon sa senso 1970. Ang Ikalimang Klase (Class 5) ay mga lungsod na may populasyong higit sa 25,000 at mas-mababa sa 49,999. Ang mga Ikaanim na Klase (Class 6) ay yaong may populasyong sa pagitan ng 12,000 at 24,999 katao, at Ikapitong Klase (Class 7) ay mga lungsod na may mga populasyong sa pagitan ng 6,000 at 11,999 katao. Ang Ikawalong Klase (Class 8) ay kinabibilangan ng lahat ng mga bayan, pati ang lahat ng mga natitirang lungsod na may mga populasyong mas-mababa sa 6,000 katao.
Ang pinakamalaking munisipalidad ay ang Birmingham na may 212,237 katao, habang pinakamaliit ang McMullen na may 10 katao.[1] Ang pinakamalaking munisipalidad ayon naman sa lawak ng lupa ay ang Huntsville, na may lawak na 209.05 mi kuw (541.4 km2), habang pinakamaliit ang McMullen na may 0.11 mi kuw (0.28 km2).[1]
